Background
The new Judge Arthur Solomon Camellia Trail at the Bamboo Farm
andCoastalGardensis destined to become one ofAmerica’s most unique camellia attractions. Developed over the past four years, the Trail now combines over 1200 camellias and companion plants including many of our most popular garden camellias with some of the most unique and rare camellia species in the world. Dr. Clifford Parks of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, one of the foremost experts on camellias in the western world, collected rare species from his extensive travels inChinaandJapan, and has donated a significant portion of his unique camellia collection to the South East Camellia Society for inclusion in theJudgeSolomonTrail.
There are many plants that compliment camellias, and we are fortunate to have many of the companion plants in theCamelliaGardenas a result of our partnership with the Southern Living Plant Collection and Encore Azaleas.
Proposal
More than $150,000 has been invested in theJudgeSolomonTrailto date by the Friend’s of the Bamboo Farm andCoastalGardens, the Chatham County Government and theUniversityofGeorgia, together with hundreds of volunteer hours, in clearing property, installing irrigation and pavers for the trail. The last part of the project is the labeling of the 1200 plants in the garden to provide a complete educational experience to the visitors of the Garden. Our estimated cost for the labeling, using our standard garden signage and vendor experience, is $15,000.
We are providing naming opportunities for portions of the garden, in small amounts, for organizations and individuals to contribute to this unique collection. An attached map displays the trail and the sections with the naming opportunities.
